Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) is a gentle, home-based treatment for kidney failure that uses the body's natural lining inside the abdomen to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood.
One of the key advantages of peritoneal dialysis (PD) over conventional hemodialysis is its flexibility. Patients can manage their treatment around their lifestyle, with the added benefits of manage their treatment with grater benefits and following a less restrictive diet and better fluid management. PD can be performed at home, at work, or even while traveling. To begin PD, a soft tube called a Tenckhoff catheter must be inserted into the peritoneal cavity through a minor surgical procedure. The catheter usually includes two Dacron cuffs one cuff fixed into rectors muscles or below it and the other one fixed to subcutaneous tissue. It is generally inserted 10 to 14 days before starting treatment to allow for healing. After catheterization, our healthcare professionals will provide proper education and training for patient and caregiver(s) to ensure the correct treatment procedure
During peritoneal dialysis, a cleansing fluid called dialysate is introduced into the peritoneal cavity through the catheter. This fluid remains in the abdomen for a prescribed period, known as the 'dwell time.' While in the cavity, the dialysate absorbs waste products and excess fluids from the body. After the dwell period, the dialysate is drained and replaced with fresh dialysate. This process comprising the fill, dwell, and drain phases is called a cycle and is repeated multiple times to ensure better quality of life. and there are 2 modalities of peritoneal dialysis, one is Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis(CAPD) and the other one is Automated peritoneal dialysis(APD)
Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) is a form of peritoneal dialysis that patients can perform manually, typically four times a day. It uses the lining of the abdomen (the peritoneum) as a natural filter to remove waste, toxins, and excess fluids from the blood through a special dialysis solution. CAPD does not require a machine, making it a flexible option that can be done at home, at work, or while traveling. It offers greater independence and is especially helpful for those who prefer to manage their treatment around their daily routine.
Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) is a type of peritoneal dialysis that uses a machine, called a cycler, to perform dialysis automatically usually overnight while the patient sleeps. The machine controls the timing, volume, and exchange of dialysis fluid, making the process convenient and hands-free. APD is ideal for those with busy daytime schedules or active lifestyles, offering effective treatment with minimal disruption to daily life.
